ANVIL's 'Story' Isn't 'Spinal Tap' But It Could Be!

Chris Knight of the National Post reports: The story of "Anvil! The Story of Anvil", which opens the Hot Docs documentary festival on Thursday, begins more than 25 years ago when its director, Sacha Gervasi, was a 15-year-old heavy metal fan in London, England. He befriended a Toronto band called ANVIL that had turned the music scene on its ear with its second album, 1982's "Metal on Metal". A year later, Gervasi became a roadie on ANVIL's North American tour. Then the boy grew up, the band faded into obscurity, and life went on. Until ...

Whatever happened to ... ?

"It was one of those things where you look back at your teen years," Gervasi says. "I had just come off this point of making a Spielberg-Hanks movie." (2004's "The Terminal", which he wrote.) "I was in the Hollywood system. And I suddenly thought, where were my old friends from ANVIL? I assumed they had broken up and died and maybe one of them had killed the other." When he sent them an email, the response was similar: "We thought you'd died or became a lawyer."
